New Toyota Mirai Review | Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology at Work
Nationwide, consumers are now quite familiar with electric vehicles, but most of us are less familiar with hydrogen fuel cell EVs. The new Toyota Mirai is one of the few production vehicles with this remarkable technology.

Performance
In some ways, hydrogen is much more like gas than pure electric power. It comes down to driving range and refueling times. Just like a gas-powered SUV would fill up in five minutes or so at a gas station, a new Toyota Mirai would fill up in about five minutes at a hydrogen fueling station.
Of course, a gas engine lets off carbon dioxide, but this hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has no emissions. There’s just a trickle of water.
The new Toyota Mirai has a potential driving range of just over 400 miles. Again, that’s closer to a standard gas-powered car than some EVs today.
The Toyota bZ4x has an excellent EV driving range of 252 miles. It charges overnight at home, and, when it needs more power, can be charged at a roadside charging station.
The reason that the Toyota Mirai is offered only in California at this time is because the network of hydrogen charging stations is still centered only in that state. Utility
Most people ask: what exactly is hydrogen fuel cell technology? The second question is usually: how can it be an electric vehicle if it uses hydrogen?
Basically it works this way. Hydrogen is the vehicle’s fuel in the same way that gasoline is fuel. However it is even more appropriate to say that hydrogen is power in the same way that electricity is power for an electric vehicle.
Fuel cells are equivalent to the large battery pack that retains electricity in a hybrid or plug in hybrid vehicle. With either the hydrogen fuel cell technology or the battery pack, power is stored and then communicated to the electric vehicle components.

Interior
In terms of size, the Mirai cabin is quite spacious but it has a small cargo hold. It is similar to the Toyota Prius and Toyota Prius Prime. Technology
As you’d hope in a futuristic car, the new Toyota Mirai cockpit is very modern, too. Its contemporary look is anchored by dual screens, and its connectivity is enhanced by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The large digital instrumentation screen provides customizable ways to get your information. A 12.3-inch touchscreen is the source for entertainment and navigational tools. Like other Toyotas today, it offers HD radio, Sirius XM connectivity, and an available WiFi hotspot

Safety Features and Driver Assistance
Toyota Safety Sense features are always standard across the lineup, and this means that the Mirai driver has all the same tools as the RAV4 Prime or Toyota bZ4x driver.
Systems work with the driver to prevent collisions. The forward-watch cameras and radar help the Mirai stop or slow before it’s too late. A blind spot monitor and lane departure system help watch for side traffic dangers and warn the driver.
