2023 Toyota Mirai Review | Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV
When it comes to electric vehicles, most people aren’t very familiar with the 2023 Toyota Mirai outside of California. Yet this cutting-edge ride represents one path to the future still barely explored.
The Mirai is one of only two production vehicles that create their power using hydrogen fuel cell technology. Naturally Toyota seeks to be a leader in this area as it has in HEV and PHEV technology.
Here’s what you need to know about the capability, trim levels, and potential of the Toyota Mirai.
Technology Evolves
In terms of production vehicles, electric vehicles currently come in three basic forms. The 2023 Toyota Prius is an example of the original hybrid. This powertrain combines a four-cylinder engine with a battery and an electric motor. The 2023 Prius Prime goes a step further. This plug in hybrid generates electric power for commuting and relies on hybrid power for long drives.
The third is the electric vehicle that relies solely on a powertrain that must be plugged into the electrical grid. This is like the 2023 Toyota bZ4x on sale now at our Phoenix AZ Toyota dealership. Major factors include battery strength, the number of electric motors, and the speed for recharging.
The Mirai is an electric vehicle, but it doesn’t ever get plugged into the grid. In fact, it doesn’t use any carbon-based power. It really does use hydrogen rather than electricity or petroleum.
Remarkably, the 2023 Toyota Mirai price is still within reach of many consumers. If you want more information about pricing, please be in touch with our staff.
Hydrogen Power and Possibility
Gas models use petroleum to trigger the spark that generates electricity. Electric vehicles use electricity to generate electricity to provide that spark. Fuel cell electric vehicles are using hydrogen fuel cells to create that spark and keep it going.
This refined scientific process takes electrons from hydrogen atoms to convert into electricity. Water vapor is the only byproduct as demonstrated again and again by the 2022 Toyota Mirai.
Another difference from regular electric vehicles is how energy is stored. A Tesla Model would use a large lithium ion battery to store electrical energy. That battery is heavier and takes more resources to create than the fuel cell for hydrogen cars.
Driving Range and Traveling
Like gas vehicles, the Mirai owner stops for a few minutes to get fuel. This takes under five minutes, and the projected range with a full tank is 402 miles.
Clearly hydrogen fuel cell cars have an advantage over regular EVs. That’s charging an electric vehicle takes time. The 2023 bZ4X charges overnight and has a range of 250 miles.
Of course, electric charging stations are becoming more plentiful across Arizona and the US. The hydrogen vehicle hang-up is that their dedicated fueling stations are limited to California. This is why the Mirai sales are limited to that state, and Toyota is providing a credit for up to three years of free fuel.
Standard Features Trim Levels
The cockpit looks appropriately futuristic with the Toyota’s advanced digital instrumentation and large infotainment touch screen. This 12.3-inch display includes navigation, Apple CarPlay connectivity, and Android Auto connectivity. Available subscriptions provide SiriusXM satellite radio or turn the cabin into Wi-Fi hotspot.
A premium audio system is another valuable standard. There are 14 speakers with JBL know-how and technology.
The cabin has unique copper-colored trim elements to spice up the dashboard and doors. Stepping up from the Mirai XLE trim level, the Mirai Limited trim adds ventilated front seats. It upgrades the dual-zone automatic climate control system to a tri-zone system, giving backseat passengers more control over their air flow.
Safety Features and Driver Assistance
As you might expect, the 2023 Mirai has the latest Toyota Safety Sense features. This advanced technology watches over the vehicle using cameras, radar, and sensors.
Adaptive cruise control makes commuting easier. Pedestrian detection and a forward collision warning help the driver stay alert to dangers. A corresponding autobrake may slow or stop the Mirai. A lane keeping assist provides steering help in response to the lane departure warning.
Mirai vs Toyota bZ4x
All in all, the 2023 Toyota Mirai is an amazing vehicle. Since the hydrogen fueling stations are limited, we recommend checking out the 2023 Toyota bZ4x. Here’s how the two vehicles differ.
The Mirai is a rear wheel drive car with a small cargo area. The bZ4x is bigger with SUV spaciousness and a larger cargo hold. With dual motors, it offers all-wheel drive with X-mode for off-road fun.
As a more mainstream model, the Toyota bZ4x will be available at more price points in more trims. There are more features, too, such as the panoramic moonroof.
