What Is the Cars.com American-Made Index?

The American-Made Index (AMI) is one of the most trusted annual rankings for measuring how "American" a vehicle truly is. Now celebrating its 20th year of publication, the Cars.com AMI evaluates approximately 400 vehicles from the current model year across five key factors: final assembly location, U.S. and Canadian parts content (as determined by the American Automobile Labeling Act), U.S. factory employment relative to vehicle production, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing.

Only 99 vehicles made the 2025 list, roughly 25% of the more than 400 models on sale in the U.S.. That means earning a spot on the AMI is no small feat. Every vehicle on the list contributes meaningfully to the American economy through manufacturing jobs, parts sourcing and local investment.

Why does this matter right now? According to a recent Cars.com survey, 51% of in-market shoppers say tariffs have influenced them to seek out American-made vehicles. This issue is about cost-consciousness and smart shopping. Vehicles with higher domestic content may be less affected by import tariffs, which could mean more stable pricing for buyers.

Toyota's Commitment to U.S. Manufacturing

Toyota's presence in the United States goes far beyond selling cars. The company directly employs nearly 48,000 people in the U.S., and has contributed to the design, engineering and assembly of more than 35 million vehicles across 11 U.S. manufacturing plants.

Those plants span the country:

  • Georgetown, Kentucky: Toyota's largest vehicle manufacturing plant in the world, producing the Camry and RAV4 Hybrid. The plant recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and has produced over 14 million vehicles since opening.
  • Princeton, Indiana: Home to the Highlander, Grand Highlander, Sienna and Lexus TX.
  • Huntsville, Alabama: A joint-venture plant with Mazda that builds the Corolla Cross Hybrid and Mazda CX-50.
  • San Antonio, Texas: Where the full-size Tundra and Sequoia are assembled.

New Investments in American Manufacturing

Toyota's investment in the U.S. continues to grow. In November 2025, the company committed to investing up to $10 billion in U.S. operations over the next five years. As part of that commitment, Toyota announced a $912 million investment across five manufacturing plants to increase hybrid vehicle production and create 252 new jobs. Most recently, Toyota announced an additional $1 billion investment in its Kentucky and Indiana plants to expand production of EVs, hybrids and the Grand Highlander.

As Toyota's leadership has put it, their philosophy is to build where we sell, and that commitment to domestic manufacturing directly benefits Arizona shoppers who want American-built quality and reliability.
