The 8th largest city in Arizona, there are 180,000 residents. The city is surrounded by Phoenix to the west, Scottsdale to the north, and Mesa and Chandler to the east.
The Tempe Town Lake is one of its most distinctive features. This large body of water was constructed by damming a portion of the dry Salt River. It opened in 1999. The city uses reclaimed water to keep it full.
Lakeside businesses include Microsoft, US Airways, Smith Barney, Silicon Valley Bank, and more. Norton Lifelock headquarters and major employer State Farm are also downtown.

The city is home to Arizona State University. Some 77,000 students attend clases on this campus. 2021 was a blockbuster year with more than 14,350 students in the on-campus freshman class.

Things to Do in Tempe
Two architectural jewels offer plays and musicals. Sitting on the lakeside, the Tempe Center for the Arts is beautiful by day or night. On the ASU, the remarkable Gammage is known as one of the “largest university-based presenters of performing arts”
The Tempe Museum and the Heart Museum introduce you to the history of the Native Arizonans and the settlers. Shopping areas downtown include the outdoor Tempe Marketplace. To escape the heat, you can head for Arizona Mills, the state’s largest indoor mall.
The area’s remarkable weather invites everyone outdoors except on the hottest summer days. Tempe parks offer places to bike, hike, splash, and play. Tempe Lake encourages swimming, biking, boating, rowing and fishing. For walking and biking, the lake is surrounded by 5 miles of paths and is crossed by four bridges.
Sports fans can find NCAA sports in season throughout the year at ASU. In the spring, the Tempe Diablo Stadium hosts the Los Angeles Angels. For more sports, Glendale is home to the Gila River Arena and the State Farm Stadium. Phoenix is home to NBA, WNBA, soccer, and indoor football professional sports.
Road Trips in Tempe
Maricopa County parks are nearby, offering close encounters with the area’s desert landscape. As long as you have a reliable car, it’s worth the hour drive to McDowell Mountain Regional Park to hike, bike and camp.
Also about an hour away, the Usery Mountain Regional Park has the added attraction of a five-star archery facility with 100 targets at six ranges. One of the Toyota hybrids can cut fuel costs in half. This includes spacious rides like the RAV4 Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, and the Venza Hybrid.
It takes three hours to get to Sedona, but it’s worth it to reach Highway 89A. This scenic drive takes you through beautiful Oak Creek Canyon.
When you have time for me, you should continue on to the 35-mile drive through the volcanic fields. It starts outside of Flagstaff and takes you by the Sunset Crater. The road takes you to the Painted Desert. There will probably be time to stop at the Wupatki National Monument to see ancient ruins.
If you like challenges, you can head to Apache Junction and the Apache Trail. This is one of the original Arizona roads. The road is paved, then gravel, and finally dirt. That might require a good off-roader.
