The 2022 Toyota RAV4 marks the 25th year that this crossover has been sold in the U.S. It clearly keeps getting better. The standard and hybrid editions earned coveted Editor’s Choice awards from the automotive journalists at Car and Driver. The LE continues to be one of the best equipped entry level trims in its class. Money-saving fuel economy is standard, and the Hybrid and Prime editions are even more frugal. Toyota has added TRD equipment to create the ultimate version of this Recreational Activity Vehicle. Here’s what to expect when you take a test drive.
Interior
The Toyota RAV4 price to value equation is a major reason this ride has become so popular. Shoppers can choose the budget-friendly LE edition and feel 100 percent satisfied. The MSRP is affordable and yet there is so much in this package. It is packed with dash tech and driver assistance tech, too. For 2022, the cabin has added more details, including LED interior lights and a locking glove box. Other favorites include the fully adjustable tilt-telescopic steering wheel and the second-row air vents. With 98.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, the cabin boasts 41 inches of front row legroom and 37.8 inches for the second row.
XLE Trim Levels and Amenities
The XLE model has been upgraded in several ways, including its new illuminated interior switches. It also has push button start, dual-zone automatic climate controls, and more USB ports. The XLE Premium has faux leather upholstery and a moonroof. The dashboard is among the elements that are padded and decoratively stitched. Exterior Styling and Colors
The fifth generation RAV4 has a chiseled appearance that was inspired by Toyota trucks. Car and Driver calls its “rugged styling”. Among its many colors, a new Calvary Blue is available on the Hybrid SE, Hybrid XSE, and TRD Off-Road models. The Hybrid XSE offers a black roof and a choice of exterior paint colors. Performance
This ride is actually a fast mover with more horsepower than many rivals. The gas editions have a Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine. It generates 203 horsepower and yet earns an EPA-estimated 30 combined mpg. The eight-speed automatic is a Direct-Shift transmission. Adding value, the brand has class-superlative maintenance coverage. It is complimentary for up to 25,000 miles or two years. Standard tow rating is 1,500 pounds.
Fuel Economy
Standard front-wheel drive fuel economy is excellent. EPA estimates show 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg in highway driving. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid can earn 40 mpg combined. Fuel economy is 41 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. This is a 30 percent improvement over the 2021 edition. Really reducing your fuel bill, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime has a 42-mile EV range in addition to its hybrid range. As such, the plug-in hybrid can get as much as 94 MPGe. Hybrid Performance

A 12 hour charging time applies only to a standard 120-volt outlet. With a 240-volt outlet, the time reduces to a mere 2.5 hours. In an exciting development, the Prime’s 0-60 mph sprint is 5.7 seconds with its gas-hybrid engine capability.
All Wheel Drive
The standard AWD system maintains fuel economy while providing all-weather capability. A Rear Driveline Disconnect (RDD) will move power from the front to back wheels to create traction. The Hybrid Toyota RAV4 and Prime editions have an independent rear motor that moves traction among the wheels.This electric all-wheel drive adds little weight to the package and yet expertly prevents slippage.
TRD-Off-Road and Adventure Trim Capability
The TRD Off-Road and Adventure trims utilize an RDD to move torque to individual wheels for trail use. This AWD system includes advanced terrain management settings and hill descent control. With 8.6 inches of ground clearance, these models rise further above trail debris. The standard panoramic camera gives views of everything around the SUV. Ready for action, the TRD Off-Road has an off-road tuned suspension, a front skid plate, all-terrain tires, and other special equipment. These two models can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Standard Dash Tech
The dash hosts a multimedia touch screen with plenty of additional tactile buttons to help you find what you need fast. The hands-free Bluetooth system is enhanced by the connectivity of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Scout GPS Link brings maps and directions to the screen.
