2027 Highlander First Look Review
Toyota Electric 3-Row SUV: A New Era
The all-new fifth-generation Highlander has transitioned into a dedicated Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). Large families will be able to cruise the streets of Phoenix metro without a drop of gas.
New Highlanders BEVs are assembled in Kentucky and contain battery modules assembled in North Carolina. So this is a 3-row EV with “Made in America” bragging rights.
The Stretch: Electric Toyota Highlander Specs
Built on a modified TNGA-K electric platform specifically designed for batteries, the 2027 Toyota Highlander looks more athletic. It has grown nearly 8 inches in wheelbase length, improving wiggle room for the 2nd and 3rd row passengers.
The electric Highlander roofline is 0.8 inches lower, and the width has increased by 2.3 inches, giving the EV a planted, modern silhouette. [We’ll publish more about 2027 Toyota Highlander Specs when the exact numbers are known.]
Performance: 2027 Highlander Range
Toyota is launching the Highlander EV with two battery choices. Front-wheel drive models will have almost 300 miles in electric range, but all-wheel drive models are expected to go over 300 miles, thanks to their larger battery.
FWD Highlander drivers will command 221 horsepower with an electric range of 287 miles. A competitive 77.0-kWh battery ensures ample power whenever it’s needed. All-wheel drive Highlander drivers will command 338 horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque. The larger 95.8-kWh battery, allows the 3-row electric Highlander to achieve a 320-mile estimated electric range.
With the standard Tesla-style port (NACS), the 3-row electric Highlander is expected to recharge (from 10 to 80 percent) in approximately 30 minutes at roadside fast chargers.
Interior: The Tech-Forward Cabin
This 3 row SUV’s look and style have changed with the powertrain. In fact, the interior is where the 2027 Toyota Highlander truly distances itself from its predecessors. Motor Trend is already praising the interior in its 2027 Highlander Review.
A standard 14-inch touchscreen dominates the dash, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster in the cockpit. There are dual Qi-compatible wireless chargers on the dash. Families will appreciate the 18 cupholders and USB-C ports in every row. Of course, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are wireless.
For those seeking luxury, the Limited trim offers a massive fixed panoramic glass roof, the largest ever in a Toyota. Acoustic glass keeps out road noise while the available rear shade blocks the summer sun. Customizable 64-color ambient lighting is a fun way to light the night.
Utility: Toyota V2L Technology on Tap
A standout electric Highlander feature is the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology. For the first time in a U.S. Toyota, the Highlander can act as a mobile power bank. With the large battery as a power source, V2L is capable of powering appliances at a campsite or serving as a backup power source for your home during an outage.
The 2027 Highlander EV will offer a 15.9 cu ft cargo hold, folding seats, and a large total-area cargo space. These 3-row electric SUVs are set to do almost everything the gas models did. They will just do it with zero emissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2027 Toyota Highlander only electric?
Yes. The 2027 Toyota Highlander is a dedicated BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle). If you are looking for a gas or hybrid powertrain, Toyota recommends the Grand Highlander, which will continue to offer those options.
What is the driving range of the 2027 Highlander?
The range varies by configuration. The base XLE FWD offers 287 miles, while the AWD versions with the 95.8-kWh battery are estimated to reach up to 320 miles on a full charge.
Is the 2027 Highlander bigger?
The electric Highlander wheelbase is nearly 8 inches longer. This stretch adds significant legroom for second- and third-row passengers. The SUV is also a few inches wider. However, the roofline is almost an inch lower.
How many people can the 2027 Highlander seat?
It seats up to seven passengers. Second-row captain’s chairs are standard, though a bench seat is available on the XLE AWD trim to accommodate a different configuration.
Does it have a "frunk" (front trunk)?
No. Despite the electric architecture, there is no usable front storage space, as Toyota utilized that area for HVAC and powertrain components to maximize cabin room. A typical frunk is only 1 to 3 cubic feet; so it probably won’t be missed.
Where is the 2027 Highlander built?
It is Toyota’s first U.S.-assembled three-row EV, produced at the Toyota Manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, with batteries sourced from North Carolina.
