2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Review
The exciting 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander made its world debut at the Chicago Art Show. The newest Toyota SUV is an intentionally-stylish and family-oriented SUV with available hybrid and Hybrid Max powertrains.
Toyota clearly listened to its customers to create this remarkable ride. By studying its target audience, they prioritized this vehicle’s comfort, class, and charisma for commuting households. In its Grand Highlander review, the critic Edmunds praises the brand’s carefully honed understanding of the American family.
The premium 3 row SUV earns the name ‘Grand’ because of its massive size, ample storage space, and cutting-edge technology. With so many premium attributes, the Grand will be able to easily compete with large 3 row SUVs like the Hyundai Palisade, Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Volkswagen Atlas, Subaru Ascent, Mazda CX-9, and Kia Telluride. The most important question, however, is: will it be right for you?
Spaciousness and Style
Seating 7 or 8, the 2024 Grand Highlander has a longer wheelbase and a wider track than the Toyota Highlander. Since it is inches longer than the regular model, Grand Highlander’s have 153.3 cubic feet of passenger space with the regular roof. That’s an extra nine cubic feet of wiggle room.
Luscious Sof-Tex trimmed seats are standard on the XLE. Leather upholstery is standard on the Limited trims. Platinum trims have a combination of leather and Ultrasuede®. Interior upholstery is offered in light gray, black or exclusive Portobello.
8-seat models have a center bench while 7-seat models have center captain’s chairs. As part of its growth, the Grand Highlander has more cargo space. The 20.6-cubic foot hold can be expanded to 57.9 or 97.5 cubes by folding the seats flat.
Size, Design, and Spaciousness
This first-generation Grand Highlander hybrid has more storage than the 2023 Toyota Highlander by 13 cubic feet. The regular Highlander is a midsize SUV that also has a third row for the kids, but the Grand Highlander has so much space that adults can fit in the third row easily.
In fact, the Grand Highlander already beats the Volkswagen Atlas in overall storage space. With so many premium attributes, the Grand will be able to easily compete with large three-row SUVs like the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride. Car and Driver has named the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander as one of the 10Best.
Cargo Hold: 21 cubic feet
Total Cargo Area: 97.5 cubic feet
Driver’s Cockpit
The Grand Highlander XLE cockpit comes stocked with the things you need the most. This includes a driver’s 10-way power chair complemented by an 8-way front passenger seat. Both seats have power-heat functions.
Drivers have a Qi wireless charger, a 7-inch MID display, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Every Grand Highlander has a 5-door smart key with a power liftgate. A digital key works with your Remote Connect subscription.
Limited and Platinum models have ventilated front seats and ambient lighting. Cockpit amenities include a heated steering wheel and a memory-function driver’s chair. Dash tech increases to include a premium multimedia system, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, and JBL audio. Platinum models also have a panoramic moonroof.
Second and Third Row Amenities in the Grand Highlander
Toyota engineers added about five inches of legroom to the third row where it counts the most. With nearly 39 inches of legroom, the second row is especially spacious.
Helping beat the heat even on our hottest Phoenix AZ summer days, the second-row has its own AC panel and side sunshades. You can even get ventilated second row seats on the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Platinum 7-seat edition.
Heated second-row seats are a Limited trim standard. This trim also offers a Toyota-exclusive 2nd row center console storage that is removable. This gives easy access to the third row and extra storage for the passengers.
Second-row left and right USB ports make it easier for passengers to charge their devices. The Limited trim level adds a smartphone storage slot.
Third-row passengers also have access to individual USB ports and a storage space for a smartphone or tablet. Parents have multi-zone climate controls so they can help ensure that the third row gets the AC they need.
Vehicle Performance
This ride always has plenty of power and poise. A standard gas turbo creates 265 horsepower and an exciting 309 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, but Dynamic All Wheel Drive is available.
Stepping up to the hybrid powertrain, output is solid 243 horsepower. Hybrids raise the fuel economy from 25 mpg combined to a manufacturer-estimated 34 mpg. Once again, the standard is front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available.
For the family driver, the allure of the Grand Highlander rests with the new Hybrid Max powertrain. As the most powerful Toyota midsize SUV ever, it can rush from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds.
Grand Highlander Hybrid Max powertrains generate 362 horsepower with 400 lb.-ft of torque. It has standard all-wheel drive that works with electric motors to accomplish incredible all-weather ability. Fuel efficiency is 27 mpg combined.
Towing and Off-Roading
If you ever find yourself needing to tow, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds for your convenience. The hybrid editions can tow up to 3,500 pounds when probably equipped.
For those who love off-roading, the best choices are probably the gas powertrain with all-wheel drive or the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max. These models have Multi-Terrain Select. This includes a Mud & Sand setting and a Rock & Dirt setting.
Driver Assistance
Toyota safety features have been enhanced for these new 3-row SUVs. More refined than ever, the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection has intersection support as well as automatic braking functions. Also improved, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist now recognizes 3D objects such as guardrails. Road Sign detection now recognizes more signs, including pedestrian crossings.
Dynamic radar cruise control works above 20 miles per hour. It has increased its distance settings from 3 to 4 options. Plus it works with Lane Tracing Assist for a more automated approach to your driving. This system now has an emergency driving stop if it detects an incapacitated driver.
Limited trim owners enjoy automatic braking with a front and rear parking assist. This trim adds sensible rain sensing wipers and fun puddle lamps.
2024 Grand Highlander Platinum models allow you to get Traffic Jam Assist by Drive Connect subscription. Plus the driver’s cockpit gains a head-up display, a 360-degree camera system, and a digital rearview mirror.
Competitive 3 Row Price
With its capability and size, this vehicle can compete with the minivan market without sacrificing the sporty look of a SUV. Furthermore, the Grand is a perfect option for luxury 3-row vehicle buyers who want top amenities without overpaying for the privilege.
In its 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Review, Consumer Reports calls it a smartly executed new entry. They note that Toyota always supplies a full complement of driver assistance features. This emphasis on safety also means that the entry level Grand Highlander is a good value for the money.
The high-end trims offer luxury at a lower price than rivals like the Cadillac Escalade. At just above $43,000, the starting Grand Highlander price is about half what Cadillac asks for its Escalade. The hybrid MSRP is just over $44,600, and the Hybrid Max MSRP is just over $54,000. Trim levels include the affordable XLE, the leather-clad Limited, and the premium Platinum.
As Car and Driver notes in their review, two years of scheduled maintenance is a nice perk with a Grand Highlander purchase. Also adding value, the hybrid technology comes with an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty. Schedule a test drive of your favorite edition.
