2024 Toyota Corolla Cross and Hybrid Review
The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid and standard Corolla Cross return to bring on the fun with two-tone exteriors and lifestyle equipment. There are updates across the lineup.
How well does the Corolla Cross or the Corolla Cross Hybrid measure up to its namesake, the Toyota Corolla? For that matter, are these subcompact SUVs big enough to be a real SUV? What’s it like to drive it?
In this 2024 Corolla Cross review, we’ll try to answer your questions about size, performance, trim levels, and other aspects of SUV ownership.
New Nightshade Model and Fun Two Tone Choices
For 2024, the biggest news may be the Corolla Cross Hybrid Nightshade. It gets that mysterious look with black mirrors, door handles, and sport alloy wheels. Blacked-out badges and black-accent headlights add more cool to a Jet Black exterior color.
Taking up the rear, there's an integrated lip spoiler and black-accented tail lights. For fun, Nightshade models can be dressed with a black roof and either Barcelona Red or Celestite Gray.
Even if you don’t want the Nightshade, you can still get an exciting two-tone exterior on the SE or XSE. This pairs the Jet Black roof with Sonic Silver, Acidic Blast, Barcelona Red Metallic, or Blue Crush Metallic. Most of these colors are available as single-tone choices, along with a special Wind Chill Pearl.
Interior Design
The Corolla Cross is smartly designed, allowing it to offer a solid 95 cubic feet of passenger space. In fact, you’ll find the second row has a remarkable 39.1 inches of headroom. Plus it takes care of passengers with dedicated air conditioning vents.
Offering a sporty look right from the start, the Corolla Cross Hybrid S wears fabric trimmed seats in black and gray. This color scheme is available on the SE, which also offers a black and blue combination. With the 2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE, the upholstery is black or black-and-blue SofTex.
Corolla Cross LE models offer the black and gray. However the Softex is offered in a Macadamia and Mocha.
Nightshade cabins have a special black and red design with red accent stitching. A wireless charger and a frameless Homelink mirror are added to the cockpit.
Performance
This hybrid generates 196 combined horsepower. This lets it do the 0-60 mph sprint in 8 seconds. It utilizes three electric motors, but this is no plug in hybrid. It keeps itself charged and gathers even more power via brake regeneration.
Electronic On Demand All-Wheel Drive provides versatility on more surfaces. It’s an all-weather system that can move traction where it’s needed instantly.
Combined fuel economy is estimated at 42 mpg, raising it from the previous 37 mpg. Even better, you can get that terrific gas mileage on the Hybrid S, SE, SE Nightshade and XSE. All models are equally efficient.
As for the gas-only Corolla Cross, it has a peppy four-cylinder engine. Its fuel-smart front-wheel drive is augmented by dynamic torque control, which can split power 50:50 to the rear wheels.. Toyota offers two years (up to 25,000 miles) of scheduled maintenance, keeping your costs down.
Utility
Not every SUV actually offers utility, but the Corolla Cross works hard to deliver on this front. Standard models have 25.3 cubic feet while hybrids have 21.5 cubic feet of space in the cargo hold. It can tow up to 1,500 pounds, demonstrating its strong build.
Furthermore it has a minimum of 8 inches of ground clearance. Some models claim 8.1 or 8.2 inches. With the Hybrid’s all-wheel drive, this indicates an ability to take on a little more than the school parking lot.
On the SE Nightshade roof, there’s a luggage rack. This Toyota accessory is available on all models. It’s part of the active lifestyle that is so important to the Corolla Cross and Corolla Cross Hybrid lineup.

Technology Rules
From the latest in driver assistance to the best dash technology, these two models have it on every trim level. Entry level trims have an 8-inch touchscreen with a Bluetooth interface. Smartphones can connect via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to send content straight to the screen.
Toyota Safety Sense covers the front and sides with a number of important crash avoidance features. This includes the emergency autobrake that can respond to forward collision dangers or the pedestrian watch. The Toyota full-speed adaptive cruise control makes it easy to handle a busy interstate.
A lane departure system tries to keep the subcompact SUV out of side crash dangers. Available on the standard model, a blind spot monitor is standard on the entry level Corolla Cross Hybrid S. This includes a rear cross traffic alert to watch for danger from oncoming cars during parking maneuvers.
