In this comparison, we’ll look at the numbers and see how the two compare.

  1. Efficiency and Fuel Economy

If you are shopping for an electric car, you are likely to put efficiency first. That’s only logical! In the case of the 2023 Toyota bZ4X vs the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4, you’ll find the numbers are quite clear. The VW lags in every category, according to the comparison charts generated by the fuel calculator at the US Department of Energy.

In this graphic, we take a look at how the front-wheel and all-wheel drive Toyota EVs compare to the rear-wheel and all-wheel drive Volkswagen EVs.

  2. Drivability and Capability

Driving an EV is not quite the same as driving a gas-powered vehicle. For one thing, there’s the issue of regenerative braking which can feel foreign to new EV drivers. Only Toyota has been perfecting regen braking systems for two decades.

Having made the system friendly to drivers, the automaker can guarantee that the 2023 Toyota bZ4X is just as drivable as a regular SUV. That’s not something VW can guarantee.

With regard to capability, the 2023 Id.4 and bZ4X have the same horsepower. The Id.4 seems to pull ahead with more torque, but that is soon canceled out by the fact that the Volkswagen is heavier than its rival.

Nonetheless, the Toyota can handle more payload overall, indicating its actual strength.

Finally, the Toyota comes in convenient front-wheel drive instead of the rear-wheel bias found on the Volkswagen.

  3. Ownership Considerations

In many ways, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X offers reassurances that the Volkswagen ID.4 just can’t give. It starts with Toyota’s flawless reputation for low emission vehicles. VW doesn’t have any U.S. hybrids while Toyota has award-winning, industry-leading hybrids such as the Prius and Prius Prime Plug-in. Of course, Toyota also makes the Corolla Hybrid, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid and more.

Secondly, the VW doesn’t have as much powertrain coverage. It stops at 48,000 miles or 48 month. Toyota continues coverage to 60,000 miles or 60 months. Toyota’s hybrid battery warranty can run for up to 150,000 miles or 120 months. With the VW ID.4, the warranty runs out at 100,000 miles or 96 months.

Lastly, the 2023 Toyota Bz4X comes with scheduled maintenance for up to 24 months or 25,000 miles. Volkswagen offers a 30,000-mile program that adds to the price of the vehicle.

Now that you know more, check out the 2023 Toyota bZ4X and make up your own mind about whether it is better than the Volkswagen ID.4.
