2023 Toyota Tundra Review | Hybrid iForce Max
From payload to tow ratings, the 2023 Toyota Tundra and the 2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid I-Force Max are a formidable team to beat. These new full size pickups are made to work hard and outlast their rivals.
The new model year sees improvements in all areas. Toyota can easily claim these full size trucks have a stronger build and better beds.
Here’s what you need to know to evaluate these trucks and determine if they can do the job you need them to do. There’s even a new air suspension to address driver concerns when the bed is crammed full or totally empty.
You can get the details on the off-road models, trim levels, and more. Keep scrolling.
Smarter Handling
The 10-speed automatic transmission would be a wonder just for its broad gear shifting range. However, it is the electronic intelligence that it possesses that makes it such a futuristic device. The system can learn the driver’s habits and start to adjust its response to match.
Furthermore, the transmission is protected by uphill-downhill shift logic. This reduces stress on the truck by anticipating changes in torque or speed while climbing a hill or cruising down a steep slope.
Standard and Hybrid Performance
The 2023 Toyota Tundra has improved capability thanks to all of the updates. The standard engine generates 348 horsepower and a whopping 405 pound-feet of torque. The i-Force twin turbo V6 generates 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
Using twin turbo technology improves fuel efficiency even as it makes the Tundra tougher and more capable. When that is added to hybrid tech, the pickup truck becomes even more useful and efficient.
The iForce Max is the new Toyota hybrid truck. This powertrain produces 437 horsepower and 585 load-moving pound-feet of torqu.
Drivers can utilize the Sport mode to get an extra electric boost when needed. On the other hand, during low-speed travel under 18 mph, the system knows to lean into the electric output and use less fuel.
Best Beds Ever
The new Tundra bed is made of sheet-molded compound. This composite cannot be dented or dinged during regular use like metal can. It certainly can’t rust. Yet it is as tough as steel.
With the new build and the tough new bed, the payload capacity has risen to a maximum 1940 pounds.
An available BedStep makes it easy for workers to get in and out. Likewise, the easy lift-and-lower tailgate makes life easier when loading and unloading.
SR and SR5 Trim Levels
Regardless of your trim level choice, Toyota piles on dash technology, storage solutions, and driver aids. The SR model has some surprising features such as automatic climate controls and a laminated noise-reducing windshield. Stepping up to the SR CrewMax, the back seat gains dedicated air conditioning vents.
The SR5 trim is all about utility. It comes with everything a person needs to tow well or haul responsibility. This includes a bed rail system with adjustable cleats and a standard tow hitch. Drivers have a trailer brake controller to help them feel more in charge of stopping. For travel, there’s a special tow-haul mode and trailer sway control.
For more adventure, you can add TRD Sport or TRD Off-Road packages to the SR5.
Luxurious Trims
When you want refinement, you have only to step up to the Tundra Limited to get that most desirable of all features for our climate: ventilated front seats. The cabin has SofTex upholstery, an 8-way power driver’s chair, a 2-way power passenger chair, and dual-zone climate controls.
At the Platinum level, you may forget the Tundra is a pickup truck. The soft instrument panel and stylish leather add more class. Second-row power-ventilated seats and rear sunshades are aboard. Drivers enjoy more power-adjustments for their chair and a power-adjusting tilt-telescopic steering column.
At the top of the heap, the 1784 wears a distinctive design that sets itself apart. A memory-enabled driver’s chair and ambient lighting are added to the Platinum’s long list of standards.
Off Roading and Sport Models
The TRD Sport is not designed for off-roading, but rather for owning the road. Toyota has lowered its suspension by about half an inch. This full size pickup is focused on driving fun.
Varying by trim level and drivetrain, the TRD Off-road Package can add exciting trail equipment to the SR5, Limited or 1784 edition. Protective features include composite skid plates. An off-road suspension and/or Bilstein shocks can be aboard to reduce jarring.
With 4x4 models, there’s a multi-terrain select that customizes the response to challenges. An electronic rear differential lock can make the 4x4 sturdier at just the right moment.
TRD Pro Model
As the ultimate off-roader, the TRD Pro was rebuilt to withstand trail challenges. It stands taller by about 1.1 inch and boasts a more planted stance. This wide track is about an inch wider than normal.
The cabin package most closely tracks with the Limited. However, there are special interior trim elements such as the unique leather-clad steering wheel. SofTex leatherette seating has special sporty inserts. As you’d expect, dash tech is maxed out on this model.
Capstone Edition
In some ways, the Tundra Capstone Edition feels like the flagship of the fleet. Cabins boast semi-aniline perforated leather upholstery. The white and black styling achieves a balance without overwhelming the senses.
This two-tone look and the high level of fit and finish helped this edition find its way onto the 10 Best Interiors List. Touchpoints are especially soft and/or well padded.
Creating the feeling of an open air truck, the panoramic roof invites the sky along for the ride. The power ventilated seats are on both rows, making every passenger happy. You can schedule a test drive of your favorite trim levels.
Entertainment Technologies
On the dash, the 8-inch touchscreen has been boosted with more power. Connectivity is assured by Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota’s Intelligent Assistant. This virtual companion helps you find what you want in the menu.
The cloud-based navigation system works as smart as it works quickly. If you should lose connectivity, it retains the information it needs to provide a map. This can be quite important in the wilds of the American Southwest.
A new 14-inch touchscreen debuted on the 2022 Toyota Tundra. This system has been praised for its large icons, simple menus, and fast processing. How is the dash tech in your current truck? It can make a great down payment for a new one.Value your trade.
Choose Your Bed and Cabin Size
The smallest bed measures 5.5 feet, about 65.6 inches. It is paired with the CrewMax cabin only. Bed depth is an ample 20.9 inches.
At 6.5 feet, the medium bed is quite big enough for many haulers. This 77.6-inch bed pairs with the crew or double cab. If you want the biggest bed of all, you want the 8.1-footer. That’s 96.5 inches long. It pairs strictly with the SR double cab
The double cab is smaller with second-row legroom measuring 33 inches. Even better, the Crew Cab has a true adult-worthy second row. It boasts 41.6 inches of legroom.
