2023 Toyota Prius Review | Prime EV
Now in the 22nd year, the 2023 Toyota Prius and Prius Prime have been upgraded (once again) to challenge the latest rivals. There’s a new build, a new look, and top numbers in efficiency and performance.
In terms of fuel economy, it earns 57 mpg, a gain over the 2022 Toyota Prius. As for horsepower, it gains about 70 horses under the hood. It’s more exciting to drive, and there’s more automation to help out busy drivers. Perhaps the most exciting feature to some Phoenix AZ shoppers is the availability of ventilated seats.
These two cars are some of the greenest machines available. In this 2023 review, we’ll take a look at the pros and cons of the new model year changes. Can these HEVs and PHEVs really stand up to the new competition? Keep scrolling to find out.
What’s New?
A new piercing silhouette is both aerodynamic and sporty. There’s a new lower center of gravity due to a shift in battery placement and the lowered build. Wider, it has more cargo space as well as enhanced wiggle room for passengers.
A new lithium-ion battery pack is lighter than the previous nickel metal battery. There’s a huge increase in capability. Front-wheel drive models achieve 194 horsepower whereas the all-wheel drive models offer 196 horsepower.
There’s more of everything, including more standard safety features and more driving assistance. You’ll find more interior choices, more parking aids, and new exterior colors. These include Guardian Gray and Cutting Edge. You may recognize Wind Chill Pearl, Reservoir Blue and Supersonic Red.
Performance Like Never Before
This year Prius drivers will enjoy performance that has never been seen on this well-loved hybrid. A 2-liter engine replaces the 1.3-liter engine from the previous generation. The FWD models have dual motors to achieve 194 horsepower. With a high-output IPM as its rear motor, AWD models can go even faster with 196 horsepower.
AWD models have been specially designed to enhance speed and agility. Drivers may notice it most during low traction road climbing. Yet it is constantly working, assisting with stability when taking a curve or turning.
2023 Prius AWD models can do the 0-60 mph sprint in 7 seconds. FWD models aren’t far behind at 7.2 seconds. This new record shaves off 2.8 seconds and indicates that the 2023 model will be more competitive in busy traffic.
As for fuel efficiency, these new Prius models show a combined rate of 57 miles per gallon with front-wheel drive. That’s an improvement over the 2022 L Eco earning a combined 56 mpg, according to EPA estimates. AWD achieves more than 50 mpg combined. You can value your trade online.
Prime Performance and Driving Range
The 2023 Prius Prime increases the 2022 25-mile driving range by 50 percent or more. This is helping this hybrid electric leader save even more conventional fuel while acting like the sport model of this hybrid. Sometimes called a PHEV, the Prime is a plug-in hybrid with the best return on your investment.
Prius Prime still uses its electric motors and hybrid engine to generate 220 horsepower. All of this is possible due to its all new Hybrid Synergy Drive. This Toyota PHEV now does the sprint in just 6.6 seconds.
Base Trim
There aren’t quite as many trim levels as you’d find on the 2022 Prius. However, this just means there’s more in every package. 2023 base editions have plenty of tech toys and plenty of soft touches, including the SofTex leather steering wheel.
Cockpits are anchored by the Toyota 8-inch touchscreen. This multimedia system is complemented by smartphone connectivity. An electronic parking brake is one way engineers reduced clutter and improved ergonomics. With 6 USB-c ports, there are four for the front seat and two for the back.
This is the first year that a blind spot monitor is standard across the lineup. Shoppers will be glad to know that they can add front and rear parking assist with its helpful automatic braking. Of course, Safety Sense is on board all Toyota Prius models to keep everyone safe.
Trim Levels
2023 Toyota Prius XLE models add fancy attributes such as SofTex faux leather and power-heated front seats. The driver enjoys an 8-way power driver’s chair and a wireless charger.
Owners will appreciate the Smart Key for easy entry and quicker lock-up. Rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and Home Link are on board. There are more conveniences such as direct light illumination and two extra rear seat cupholders.
The front-rear autobrake is standard with the XLE grade. You can add the Toyota Digital Key, the larger touchscreen and/or the fixed glass roof to your package.
All of these features are standard on the 2023 Toyota Prius Limited. Drivers will love the connectivity of the 12.3-inch touchscreen system. Favorite features include the JBL Premium audio system and smart glass roof.
For cold weather, it has heated front seats, available heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. For utility, it has a power rear door. Options include the advanced parking system,
An exciting Digital Rear-View Mirror can keep an eye on traffic. You push a button and immediately get a live view of what’s behind the Prius.
Prius Prime models are similar. The main addition to the packages is a charging cable for a 120-volt or 240-volt outlet. If you are wondering about the Toyota Prius price for 2023, you should reach out to our staff for information.
Dash Tech and Remote Connectivity
Toyota dash tech has been cutting edge since it debuted in cars like the Prius more than a decade ago. The standard touchscreen today provides advanced connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The system allows for Amazon Alexa connectivity, provides SiriusXm connectivity and can be enhanced through WiFi Connect. This can bring you access to your own Amazon Music or Apple Music subscriptions for easy streaming.
A new 12.3 touchscreen isn’t just bigger than the 11.6 navigation touchscreen. It’s a better one, too. Split-display capability allows you to monitor your navigational maps while keeping an eye on other infotainment aspects. Over the Air updates keep data as fresh as possible.
You can utilize cloud navigation or take advantage of live-agent destination assist. Best of all, there’s a new “Hey Toyota” intelligent assistant feature with Connected Service Drive Connect.
With Remote Connect, you’ve got the ability to lock and unlock remotely via an app. Other functions include turning on headlights, cooling the cabin, and remotely starting the Prius or Prius Prime. This system works with your smartphone as a Digital Key, bringing another convenience to the long list of available systems and features.
Safety Sense and Semi-Automated Driving
As it has for many years, the Prius family can promise the latest and greatest driver aids as standards. These safety features utilize cameras, radar, sonar and computerized intelligence to warn the driver or assist with steering or braking. This includes pedestrian detection, forward collision watch, and a responsive autobrake, but it has expanded to include cyclists and motorcyclists. The lane departure alert works with the driver and offers a steering assist if needed.
Unlike some brands, Toyota includes adaptive cruise control (ACC). This full-speed system uses dynamic radar for greater precision. Working with ACC, there’s a lane tracing assist to maintain travel within the marked lines. The blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic watch are two more ways that this car helps drivers avoid side swipe situations.
A road sign assist can influence the ACC if it recognizes changes in the speed limit. This year it recognizes more signs including certain markings for intersections.
Completely new for 2023, Proactive Driving Assist is a valuable standard. Systems coordinate to provide an even more advanced ACC experience. This includes the ability to maintain distances, apply braking to anticipate curves, recognize cyclists, and more. Another new 2023 system is the emergency driving stop. This will only stop the car if it recognizes the driver has quit operating the vehicle.
Advanced Technologies at Work
Toyota has developed extensive driver assistance technologies that are hard at work on the Prius and Prius Prime. These safety features utilize cameras, radar, sonar and computerized intelligence to warn the driver or assist with steering or braking.
Toyota Safety Sense includes the forward collision warning system with an emergency autobrake. This watches for slowing cars ahead in the same lane and for pedestrians.
To reduce the chances of rolling into the path of another car, there’s a lane departure warning and lane assist. Additional features include traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, and high beam assist. Other available features include a head up display, rain-sensing wipers and adaptive headlights.
Parking Aids
The Prius was one of the earliest cars to have a standard rearview camera. It’s still standard, but it now has a companion. The rear cross traffic alert reduces the chances that the car will reverse into oncoming side traffic.
For 2023, every Prius can come equipped with an autobrake that reacts to front or rear dangers while doing slow maneuvers. Prius Limited models can add a Panoramic 360-degree camera systems and a hands-free Advanced Parking System. This is an automated way to take care of parallel or perpendicular parking. Schedule a test drive and see for yourself how this feature assists you.
Safety Ratings and Services
When it comes to safety, the Prius and Prius Prime have earned five-star NHTSA ratings. This federal rating is matched with good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
These hybrids have ten airbags to ensure excellent response in a bad situation.
Toyotas come with free road assistance for the first two years, Furthermore, the Safety Connect subscription is complementary for the first year. This gives owners peace of mind with both an SOS button and automatic notification in case of an emergency or accident.
