2023 Toyota GR86: Gazoo Sports Car
With its Gazoon Racing background, the 2023 Toyota GR86 is a sports car ready for the road and the track. You can even get GR-specific customizations to make this ride even more fun.
This car represents the newest generation of the Toyota sports car classic. Gazoo Racing know-how helped Toyota engineers reimagine it as a lighter, more aerodynamic ride with significant performance capability for its size and class. A new Special Edition is on the menu.

Performance
A 2.4-liter flat-four boxer engine is the car’s clever powertrain. While the old Toyota 86 had 205 horsepower, the 2023 models have 228 horses under the hood. Increasing by 28 lb-ft, the torque is rated at 184 lb ft. Plus the RPM level is lower and can be attained faster.
For cornering, GR engineers devised a better pump that keeps fuel flowing as evenly on curves as straightaways. A special high-speed unit improves the water pump. The radiator motor was upgraded to allow for high capacity use. The unique oil cooler is a five-level water-cooled device.
Lightweight, Near Perfect Balance
Part of this car’s capability comes from the lighter curb weight. Military grade aluminum is used for the hood, fenders, roof panel, and seat frames. These measures ensure that the 2023 GR86 is one of the lightest production cars on the road.
The weight balance matters too. Fortunately this car has an almost perfect ratio at 53/47. This gives the car a low center of gravity, another element in sports car driving.
With its 6-speed manual transmission, the GR86 Toyota sports car is almost one second faster than the previous Toyota 86 during the 0 to 60 mph sprint. Even better, the automatic transmission allows it to do the sprint 1.4 seconds faster than before.
Manual and Automatic Transmissions
The 6-speed manual transmission is standard, and it has been refined with special features such as a carbon synchronizer. This special feature is especially useful in transition gears such as the 3rd and 4th. Even the shape of the shift lever was redesigned for the Toyota GR86 2022 model. If you are heading off to do laps, you can take advantage of a track mode, and you can turn off the traction controls.
On the 6-speed automatic, the sport mode recognizes how to harness speed better. A new high-capacity converter was developed to ensure that the torque is used well and wisely. With either transmission, rear-wheel drive is always fun in a sports car this size.
Sporty GR86 Colors and Exterior
With a G-mesh-shaped matrix grille and parabola LED headlight, this is one sports car that cannot be confused with a rival. Large air intakes on the grille help cool the engine.
The sexy silhouette looks good, but it holds many secrets to the car’s high performance driving capability. Many individual elements have been curved or textured to resist the wind.
To stop air from getting trapped in the wheel wells, there are air intakes on the side sill spoilers. Inverted rear wheel arches continue to move the air out from under the car. At the rear, there are bumper fins and a duckbill spoiler to exert proper downforce.
Shoppers can go for something racy like Trueno Blue or Track bRed. Flashy in their own way, the other GR86 exterior colors are Steel Silver, Neptune, Halo White, Pavement Gray and Raven Black.
Exciting Interior
The sexy exterior could be where the fun ends, but Toyota was careful to bring excitement into the cabin. A digital gauge shows off with a red ring around the speedometer to signal shifting into sport mode. When shifted into track mode, the system highlights the RPM Band.
The 7-inch instrument display screen goes into a GR-logo animation when the start button is pushed. Additional digital instrumentation shows oil temperature, coolant temperature, and, if needed, lap times.
In this ergonomic cockpit, drivers will find piano-key switches in easy reach. Large LED dials are easy to see. Duplicate switches are at your fingertips on the leather-clad steering wheel.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto add your choice of map apps to the 8-inch touchscreen. This advanced system can learn from you. It has speech recognition functions that get more refined as you utilize them. HD radio and iPod connectivity are additional standards.
Trim Levels
GR86 Toyota cabins come dressed in black. Seats feature G-embossed fabric and sports bolstering. Sport fabric and a textured vinyl add a soft touch to the different elements such as the door panels and dashboard.
A black and silver color scheme sets the Toyota GR86 Premium apart. Racy elements include the aluminum footrest and aluminum sport pedals. Premium trim upholstery combines perforated UltraSuede with leather-clad bolstering.
The GR86 Special Edition is the next big thing. It is limited to 860 units so shoppers need to act fast to get one. The exclusive Solar Shift exterior is a fun orange with black chrome exhaust times and matte black wheels.
Its allure is definitely the cat-back performance exhaust. Standards align with the well-equipped GR86 premium trim level. This means summer tires and adaptive LED headlights. Interiors have a richer ambiance plus more audio speakers and heated seats.
Safety and Driver Assistance
Safety is always emphasized by Toyota even in a racy car like this one. For instance, the 2022 Toyota GR86 added a driver’s knee airbag. To make sure speedy travel can be stopped when needed, the car has power-assisted ventilated disc brakes.
In addition, it has an emergency autobrake that responds to forward collision dangers or pedestrian detection. A lane departure warning and assist can keep the small car out of harm’s way.
