Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner Right for You?

Although the 4Runner is considered a rugged midsize SUV, Toyota has put a priority on quality materials and passenger comfort. Large comfortable perches provide support throughout the journey. On the second row, riders have a center armrest. Passengers have a 4-point reclining seat. EPA passenger volume is 97.3 cubic feet for two rows and 128 cubic feet for three rows.

In 7-seat models, the second row has a one-touch button to allow access to the third row. The third row, if included, can be folded in full or 50/50 to provide more cargo space.

Behind the second row, the cargo hold measures 47.2 cubic feet, one of the largest standard cargo areas on the market. With the seats folded, it can offer 89.7 cubic feet of space. Unlike many rivals, there is no need to take off the headrests. A sliding rear cargo deck adds versatility.

With the entry level SR model, a welcoming cockpit accommodates the driver’s needs. Push button start is part of the Smart Key system. Optitron instrumentation and a 4.2-inch MID keep the driver informed of vital data. A leather-clad steering wheel provides duplicate controls for many audio and phone functions.

This tech-rich package includes the brand’s excellent 8-inch touch screen. This system hosts its own apps, and you download more using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and your cellphone. Apple Music can be coordinated with integrated streaming. A WiFi hotspot allows you to add more connectivity for individual devices.

SR5 Premium models add a much more extensive touchscreen system with navigation and additional speakers. Seating includes an 8-way power adjustable driver’s chair and 4-way power adjustable seat. Plus both rows are covered in an elegant SofTex upholstery.

On the other hand, you may prefer the TRD Sport. It wears unique gray stitching on its Black SofTex seats. TRD logos and special floor mats are additional customized aspects. TRD Off-Road models add Audio Plus with HD Radio and Amazon Alexa compatibility.

For a more refined cabin, the TRD Off-Road Premium has the heated power chairs and other standards found on the SR5 Premium. However, the SofTex trimmed seats have a splash of color from the red TRD logo.

If you love music, the JBL Audio System on the TRD Pro is for you. This model also comes with special TRD customizations such as the floor mats and shift knob. It has a power moonroof like the 40th Anniversary edition.

As the top of the trim ladder, the 4Runner Limited has even more luxuries, including lush perforated leather. The power driver’s chair adds memory features, and the passenger chair is upgraded with its own power-adjustable features.

Phoenix AZ summers won’t seem so hot with standard ventilated seats up front and the addition of second row vents. This edition has dual zone automatic climate controls for extra comfort. A panoramic view monitor is a fun upgrade from the standard rearview camera.

The special look starts with distinctive 4Runner exterior colors such as Midnight Black Metallic or Barcelona Red Metallic. Toyota adds contrast with bronze-colored alloys, bronze badging, and a body-color grille. The LED taillights wear a smoked sport trim.

Even better, the Heritage Graphics Package adds a tri-colored stripe to celebrate the brand’s off-road racing heritage. The retro stripe combines yellow, orange and red in an L-shaped pattern that runs down the second row window and races forward across the hood.

40th Anniversary seats have bronze stitching across the black SofTex upholstery. Bronze badging adds more color to the center console. The special floor mats and a moonroof complete the look.

All models have two skid plates protecting the fuel tank and the front suspension. The 2023 4Runner 40th Anniversary model adds a skid plate to protect the 4x4 transfer case. Ground clearance for these models is 9.6 inches.

The part time 4x4 drivetrain has a locking rear differential. TRD Off-Road, Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro models have crawl control and multi-terrain select. Even better, special multi-terrain anti-lock brakes can balance on-road and off-road stopping needs. Shoppers may add the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System.

With A-Trac, Limited models have a special full time 4-wheel drive system. This includes active traction control and a Torsen limited slip center differential. Smoothing the bumps, this model has an X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension.

Due to the tough athletic build and body on frame construction of the 4Runner, rear-wheel models aren’t bound to the road. Toyota has given them an automatic limited-slip differential.

The powerful engine delivers a solid level of performance for both on road and off road action. Output is 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Two years of complimentary maintenance help owners keep their 4Runner in top condition.

Rear-wheel drive is an excellent road companion. However, many will step up to the part-time or full-time four-wheel drivetrain.

Trailering is easy with a 5,000-pound tow rating on both the 4x2 and 4x4 models. An integrated tow hitch receiver is standard. As for payload, the rating is 1,700 pounds (4x2) or 1,625 pounds (4x4).
