East Valley

The Cities of East Valley AZ

Everyone seems to agree that the region includes Gilbert, Chandler, Mesa, Tempe and Queen Creek. Most tend to agree that it includes Scottsdale, Apache Junction and Guadalupe. If you count all of these cities, some 1,517,000 people live in the region.

The name was first applied in the early 1980s. Mesa and Tempe were the only big cities then. Their business leaders wanted to attract business to the East Valley.

The only time the name was ever made official was when the Arizona State Legislature. They established an East Valley-wide tax base for the East Valley Institute of Technology, a vocational school serving 10 school districts.

The Economy of the East Valley

A common denominator that unites this region is aviation and aerospace businesses. World War II first brought pilots here for training. There was plenty of room for runways then. Military bases, past and present, added to the emphasis on flight.

Today, big names like Boeing, Northrup Gruman, and Honeywell Aerospace provide thousands of area jobs. More jobs are found at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and three additional general aviation airports.

Another common denominator is technology, especially Intel. The company has grown exponentially since it first came to Chandler. Its presence has helped attract startups and major internet businesses to the area. GoDaddy and PayPal are big employers in the East Valley.

The Cactus League circuit added Major League baseball to the economy. Other big employers include financial services, healthcare, and insurance.

A complex system of interstates, loops and other roads has developed along with the big population booms. For those who commute, there’s always too much traffic. It’s much easier when you are behind the wheel of good Toyota cars, trucks or SUVs.

The Natural World in East Valley AZ

Another way to look at the East Valley is to recognize the mountains that surround it. These include the McDowell Mountains, the Superstition Mountains, and the San Tan Mountains.

Located near Queen Creek, the San Tan Mountain Regional Park offers outdoor activities amid the Sonoran Desert mountain environment. Northeast of Scottsdale, the McDowell Mountain Regional Park covers 21,099 acres. From Gilbert, you might head up to the Usery Mountain Regional Park. In Apache Junction, you are at the foot of the Superstition Mountains and can catch the Apache Trail..

With so many parks, the East Valley is known for its outdoor activities. We can stay close to home and enjoy world-class natural classrooms. The Gilbert Riparian preserve is known nationally for its large variety of birds. The Boyce Thompson Arboretum Park and Desert Botanical Garden show off the wide variety of life that can exist in our desert world.
